How to delete your account
You can delete your Niko account yourself, from inside the app, without asking us and without waiting for us.
- Open Niko and go to Profile.
- Scroll to the bottom and choose Delete account.
- Type the email address on the account to confirm, then choose Delete my account.
The confirmation is your own email address rather than a password or a tick box. A deletion here cannot be reversed by us afterwards, and an address that has to be typed out is the difference between a decision and a slip of the thumb.
If you no longer have the app, or cannot sign in, you can ask us instead. See asking us to delete it for you below. You do not need to reinstall Niko to be deleted.
What is deleted
Everything Niko holds about you, on our own servers, in one operation. Not hidden, not deactivated, not marked closed — removed.
| What | What happens to it |
|---|---|
| Your account and profile | Deleted. Name, email address, phone number, and the record that the account existed. |
| How you signed in | Deleted. Your password, any passkeys registered to the account, and the link to Apple or Google if you used one. |
| Sessions and access tokens | Refused immediately, everywhere, on every device — including any token already issued and still within its lifetime. |
| Your vehicles | Deleted, along with the manufacturer tokens that let Niko reach them. |
| Vehicle state and location history | Deleted, including the streamed readings held against the vehicle rather than against you. |
| Commands and the audit record | Deleted. Kept while an account exists so a dispute about what was sent to a car can be settled; there is nothing left to dispute once the account is gone. |
| Charging, tyre and trip readings | Deleted. |
| Automations and saved places | Deleted. |
| Addresses, orders and saved cards | Deleted. We never held your full card number in the first place; what is deleted is the reference Stripe gave us in its place. |
| Notification, alert and marketing preferences | Deleted, together with the devices registered for push notifications. |
| Support correspondence | Deleted, including the messages in any thread you opened with us. |
| Two-factor settings | Deleted. |
The account record is the root of all of it. Everything above is attached to that record in the database in such a way that it cannot outlive it, which is why this is one operation rather than a list somebody has to remember to work through.
What is not deleted, and why
Three things survive, and none of them identifies you as an account holder. We would rather set them out than let you find them later.
- A release announcement list, if you joined one. Asking to be told when Niko reaches a new platform is not the same request as holding an account: it needs no account, and it is stored separately, by email address alone. Deleting your account therefore does not take you off it, because “delete my account” and “stop emailing me” are different requests with different answers. Every one of those messages carries an unsubscribe link that works without signing in, and unsubscribing keeps a record that you unsubscribed — which is the only way to be sure we do not write to you again.
- Feedback you sent about the app. In-app feedback is stored with no author: there is no column for one, deliberately, so that a note about a screen can never be traced back to whoever wrote it. It cannot be deleted with your account because it was never attached to it. If you told us who you were inside the text of a note and want it removed, write to support@nikoapp.co.uk and we will delete the note itself.
- Backups, for a short while. Our backups are overwritten on their own cycle. A record deleted today can survive in a backup until that cycle passes over it. Nothing reads from a backup in normal operation, and a restore does not bring a deleted account back.
Aside from these, Niko keeps nothing about you. We do not keep a suppression list of deleted accounts, a shadow copy, or an anonymised profile assembled from what used to be yours.
It cannot be undone
There is no grace period and no restore. The moment the confirmation goes through, the data is gone, and we have no copy to put back.
You are welcome to create a new account with the same email address afterwards. It will be a new account: none of the history above comes back with it.
If what you want is a copy of your data, take it before you delete the account. data protection law gives you the right to one, and the app will export it for you at any time while the account is open. See something short of deletion.
Two things only you can do
Deleting your account removes everything we hold and stops Niko reaching your car. On the way out, Niko also asks your manufacturer to withdraw the authorisation you gave it, and takes your cars off the telemetry stream.
Two things remain that no application can do on your behalf, because Tesla provides no way for one to do them. They are worth doing, and somebody who is not told this reasonably believes the link is gone when it is not:
- Withdraw Niko’s access at Tesla. Tesla keeps its own record of which applications you have approved, separately from anything we hold. The app shows you a direct link to the revoke page at the moment your account is deleted; you can also reach it from your Tesla account, under the third-party applications you have authorised.
- Remove Niko’s key from the car. In the vehicle: Controls, then Locks, then delete the Niko key. A key that is left in place is a key that is still in place, whatever any server has forgotten.
Your car is not changed
Deleting your Niko account does nothing to the vehicle itself. No setting on it is altered, no limit is left behind, nothing is locked or unlocked, and your manufacturer account is untouched. You can connect the same car to a new Niko account whenever you like.
Asking us to delete it for you
You do not need the app, and you do not need to be able to sign in. Write to support@nikoapp.co.uk from the email address on the account and ask us to delete it. If you prefer to write on paper, the address is 25 Pateley Square, Wigan, WN6 7HG, United Kingdom.
- We may have to confirm that the account is yours before we delete it, so that we do not erase somebody else’s account for whoever asked. Writing from the address on the account is usually enough.
- What we then do to the data is identical to what the app does. It is the same operation, run by us rather than by you, for exactly this reason: a person who cannot reach the app must not end up with a lesser deletion.
- We will confirm in writing once it is done, and tell you about the two Tesla steps above.
Something short of deletion
Deleting the account is the largest of several things you may actually want, and it is not always the one that fits. All of these you can do yourself, in the app, without losing anything else:
- Take a copy of your data. Export it from the app at any time.
- Disconnect a vehicle. This removes that car and its manufacturer tokens, and leaves your account standing.
- Sign out other devices. Every other session is refused, without touching this one.
- Stop marketing email. Change the preference in the app, or use the unsubscribe link in any message. You cannot opt out of service messages while you hold an account — a security alert or notice of a change to these documents is not marketing.
- Correct something that is wrong. Edit it in the app, or write to us.
data protection law gives you these as rights, not favours, and exercising any of them is free. The privacy notice sets out the full list and how to enforce it, including your right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
How long it takes
- Deleting from the app is immediate. The data is gone before the screen tells you so, and every session on every device stops working at the same moment.
- Withdrawing the authorisation at your manufacturer and taking your cars off the telemetry stream is attempted first, and given a short time to succeed. If your manufacturer cannot be reached in that moment, your deletion goes ahead regardless: somebody who has asked to be erased is erased whether or not a third party is answering.
- If you ask us by email, we will answer within 30 days, and in practice sooner. If a request is unusually complex we may extend that, and we will tell you why.
- Backups pass over the deleted records on their own cycle, as described above.
Asking us about this
Write to support@nikoapp.co.uk with anything about deletion or about your data. By post: 25 Pateley Square, Wigan, WN6 7HG, United Kingdom.
This page is published by Niko Developments Ltd, company number 17450168. The privacy notice names who is responsible for your personal data and sets out every right you hold over it; it is not repeated here, so that the two cannot drift apart.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled a deletion request, please tell us first so that we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office — https://ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint/.
